Solution for Elections: Instant Runoff Voting for City Wide Elections

Instant Runoff Voting for City Wide Elections

New York State Election Law §6-162 currently requires that if no candidate for mayor, public advocate, or comptroller in New York City secures forty percent or more in a primary election, the city must hold a runoff election for the top two-vote getters. There are a number of issues under this system such as administrative issues with preparing poling sites and ballots, low voter turnout, and millions in unnecessary costs to the city. I support Citizens Union’s recommendations for an immediate solution to address the administrative difficulties presented by potential runoff elections. An instant runoff voting system would eliminate these issues while maintaining democratic integrity.
