A new report by a group opposing the construction of the waste transfer station on the Upper East Side claims that the city’s comprehensive waste management plan is deeply flawed –the latest salvo in a battle between local residents and a city that’s struggling to adequately deal with the trash it generates.

While there was a lot of hype about a report that the NYPD is testing Google Glass, in the short-term a policy-shift toward more accessible NYPD data has the potential to be more consequential for New Yorkers at large.

BetaNYC, New York City's Code for America brigade, is embracing the prospect of change under the administration of Mayor Bill de Blasio by seizing on his agenda priority to prevent pedestrian fatalities to renew its call for the city and the NYPD to release traffic data in a more usable format.

Wednesday was the first day on the job for 21 of the 51 members of the New York City Council. Their first order of business was no easy task: electing a new Speaker.

The official vote was in the Council chambers, however, there has been intense politicking for weeks. County leaders and Mayor Bill de Blasio have tried to sway the members to back their preferred candidate. The pressure gave some of the freshman Council members—many of whom have never held political office before—a first taste of New York City politics.

Ben Kallos: The reason I ran was to stop the dump. I’m still the only one providing a plan. The first part is to work with the existing coalition. I’d also work with the elected officials like Carolyn Maloney and Liz Krueger, who have endorsed me, as part of a larger coalition because it can’t be just one person who can stop this. It’s about recycling. New York City’s at 15 percent, we can get to 75 percent recycling like many other cities and we can drastically reduce our waste so that we can leave this waste landfill model that doesn’t belong here or any other residential neighborhood.

I will stand up to whomever is the mayor and make sure they do not build a marine transfer station in this residential neighborhood or any other because they don’t belong here.

In District 5, StreetsPAC likes Ben Kallos to succeed Jessica Lappin as council rep for the Upper East Side and Roosevelt Island. Kallos would like to see bike-share expanded to the district, according to StreetsPAC, and would work to bring crosstown Select Bus Service to the Upper East and Upper West Sides. A “regular cyclist,” Kallos wants traffic calmed near the Queensboro Bridge, and “envisions a true complete-streets treatment for Second Avenue after subway construction ends, with loading zones, performance-based parking, and a protected bicycle path.”

BEN KALLOS, DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE FOR CD5

The construction of the 91st St. Marine Transfer Station would not constitute, as proponents suggest, “environmental justice” or Manhattan doing its “fair share,” and this isn’t just an issue about our backyards. No residential neighborhood – not mixed-income Yorkville, or any other part of the city – should be the site of a trash facility like this one.
