Holocaust Remembrance DaySubmitted by kallos on Mon, 04/08/2013 - 1:10pm
Today is Holocaust Remembrance Day, a day of deep importance for all of us. Many of us have loved ones who were affected by the atrocities of the Holocaust. My grandparents fled Hungary to escape the horrors of the Holocaust. Rabbi Arthur Schneier, my teacher at the Park East Day School, is a Holocaust survivor who has devoted his life to protecting religious freedom and promoting human rights. Today, we honor and remember the millions of victims who lost their lives.
Anti-Nazi theologian Martin Niemöller, who spent seven years in concentration camps, famously said:
First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Socialist.
Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Trade Unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- Because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me--and there was no one left to speak for me.
Today is a day to remember that we all must speak up for one another.
